When refusal becomes armour

The painting explores the subtle passage between a “no” that is necessary to affirm oneself and a refusal which, repeated automatically, ends up becoming closure.

The child at the centre has discovered the strength of saying “I can do it alone”: an important step on the path towards autonomy. Yet around him, several figures seem to offer possibilities he can no longer see, because every proposal is rejected before it can even be considered.

The work thus opens a question: when does a “no” protect our freedom, and when does it instead become an armour that keeps us from welcoming something new?

Physical nearness without real contact

Three gazes touch but never meet. Invisible planes keep each figure inside a private field of fears, expectations, and illusions. Colours encircle each character like distinct emotional climates that fail to merge—producing relational loneliness.

On the wire between longing and becoming

A tender, ambiguous figure balances above a carpet of abandoned toys. The smile glances backward—tempted to return. The suspended drops announce awareness: keep moving and a new direction can take form.

The need for help and the risk of identifying with fragility

A little girl reaches out towards a figure ready to welcome her. Behind her, however, appears a larger shadow, the symbolic presence of the part that feels powerless, neglected or in need.

The painting observes what can happen when an experience of fragility ceases to be a temporary condition and becomes an identity through which relationships with others are interpreted.

Even those who offer help can unknowingly enter the same dynamic, until the boundary between support and mutual dependence is lost.

The work does not judge suffering: rather, it invites us to ask when the need to be welcomed helps us grow, and when it risks holding us in a role that becomes difficult to leave.

Consolation — an intimate gesture between fragility and renewal

The outstretched hand becomes a bridge between vulnerability and hope. A quiet choreography of giving and receiving care unfolds between the figures.

The work invites reflection on the strength of presence and welcome: at times we cannot take away another’s pain, but we can keep them from having to cross it entirely alone.

When a sudden event cracks the surface and brings to light what moves within us

With The Unexpected, the artist observes what happens when an unforeseen event interrupts the habitual equilibrium and suddenly makes visible emotions, fears and vulnerabilities that had until then remained in the background.

A lattice of bright, broken lines captures the instant equilibrium fails. Repressed emotion surfaces; identity wavers. Crisis becomes the opening for new awareness.

Growth asks for effort—while play keeps calling

A school of life scene: attention slips toward lightness—bird, glass marble, coloured ball—while the clock without hands reminds us that time flows even when we look away.

A potent metaphor: goodwill that misguides. To truly help, we must first see—free of projections and wishful scripts.

Indolence — the surrender of awareness through the ages

A clear allegory of inner laziness: habit becomes ballast for the soul. Mazzoldi invites responsibility and wakefulness—at every age.

Envy — projected desire and the chain of pain
